Student Reading

I made it over to Vancouver Kidsbooks today and scored books for all the student reading I’m assigning this term, as a writing coach over at Quill Academy of Creative Writing.

Of course, I made a few personal purchases. I’m always adding to my ever-growing to-read pile. Reading is an essential part of my writing process — good for new ideas and research, plus the exposure to all kinds of writing styles and genres (yes, I read beyond my genre!).

I’m a sucker for YA books. Indeed, you will always find me in these sections trying to suss out books for my students, my kids, and myself. They tend to be enjoyable, well-written, and fast-paced reading. If it isn’t, then it surely isn’t for kids. I also like them because they are often packed with magic and cool creatures.

My adult reading is often, well, sort of sleepy. I love it, don’t get me wrong. However, the balance of kids books and my history obsession is very, very welcome.

Now to find some extra time for myself — maybe I’ll hide out in the “Fortress of Solitude.”
